Baby Fat

On baby Mina's 2 month check-up (she was 2.5 mos old during the visit), she weighed in at 15.4 lbs. This puts her at the 95th percentile for weight.

Did you get that? Mina is 15.4 lbs. at 2.5 months. Whoa!

Apparently, the main cause for this is high-fat content in mother's milk. My milk packs a punch!

The doctor told me not to worry and that it's not something I'm eating. However, I can't help but worry a bit. Will this hinder her mobility? Will this mean that she'll be fat when she grows older? I can't put her on a diet, she already eats on the low end of the average. The average is 19-32 oz. and she gets probably 19 oz. or less a day. She eats no more than 3 oz. and eats about 9 times a day. That is with feeding in demand already.

Sigh. I know a lot of fat babies end up being average in size later on but a mom can't help but worry. Questions of is this normal dance in my brain?

Mommies, any feedback?

you prompted me to check on louna's blog and compare hehe.. she was a chubby babes too, 12.5 lbs at 2 months.

but you have to compare her weight to her height so you won't worry that much. most of the babies this age are really cuddly.

check her 2nd month blog here.

Hi! Thanks for visiting our blog too! You're on my favorites list now as a blog to watch! :)

Our baby Max was almost 12 lbs, 14 oz at his 2 month checkup. I thought he was growing too fast, since he went from the 50th percentile for weight at his 1-month to the 95th percentile at his 2-month. Our pediatrician (and an old friend of mine) told us not to worry, and that they're changing all the time and that it's completely normal as long as we're still within the charts. I'm just glad that Max is happy boy...

Your daughter is awfully cute! I love the little red gap onesie.

nah, no reason to worry. this is not the time to put her on any diet. in fact, at this point, she eats on instinct, that is, eats only when hungry and only as much as she needs. you don't want to disrupt that, so just continue to feed on demand.

what makes babies worryingly overweight are usually wrong eating patterns and habits acquired later, when solids are involved na. besides, a child under 3 isn't likely to be put on a diet because the brain's development is more important at this age.

don't worry, when she starts crawling and walking, she'll lose a bit of that chubbiness.

Ana: thanks for that link to Louna's memory lane. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

davenval: I'm waiting for her to roll over and hopefully by then she'll slow down with weight gain.

ruth: yup, no diet for my little chunky monkey.

Don't worry about it too much. When she starts teething she will lose some weight. When she starts walking and running, moreso. Also, all the nutrients are needed to feed the growing brain. May lipo naman kung sakali pero walang pampalit sa mahinang utak..hehehe :)

Wow she is a heavyweight! No need to worry at this stage. She may crawl or walk earlier or later than leaner babies but that's just her personal development, not because of mommy's good milk :)

Hi there! No need to worry. Remember, breastfed babies nga are less likely to be obese. You're doing everything right!
and may I just say your Notes to Mina are so sweet. What a touching way to preserve the memories for her.
